Job Descriptions
Nanny
A person who cares for children in the homes of the families, providing breakfast, lunch and dinner, light housekeeping duties, assistance with homework, transportation to and from school and activities, play time, planning and supervision of special events, and more. Nannies also help with toileting, bathing, and grooming, and care for sick children, according to physician orders. When caring for infants, nannies sterilize bottles and prepare formula.
Nannies can be hired as a live-in nanny in which they will live in the home of the family, or as a live-out nanny in which they will have a residence away from the home they work in.
A temporary nanny is usually registered with a nanny agency and works strictly to fill temporary needs, whether it is for specific points during the school year, vacations or other times.
Governess
Usually a college-educated individual who has a degree in early childhood education, she is responsible for tackling many of the same activities that parents do: light housekeeping for the children, ensuring the children have three meals per day, educating the children, transporting the children to and from school and activities, overseeing play or recreational time, and more. Unlike a nanny, a governess primarily is hired for caring for school-age children and commands a higher salary because of her education and skills.
Baby Nurse
Educated and certified in the field of nursing, a baby nurse provides care for a newborn baby in the home of the family. Duties include breast/bottle-feeding assistance, sterilization of bottles and pacifiers, diaper changing, bathing, grooming, dressing, laundry, and more.
